"Those who enter the country illegally violate the law."

"Every new citizen of the United States has an obligation to learn our customs and values, including liberty and civic responsibility, equality under God and tolerance for others, and the English language." --George orWell Bush, Tucson, Arizona, November 28th, 2005

January 20th, 2009 will be The End Of An Error.

Thoughts on Immigration

"Obligation to learn our customs...." and "tolerance" in the same sentence. It made me laugh but this is important. Our President's leadership in this area is important.

My thoughts:

New people in this country will buy things and work at certain, low paying jobs. We should welcome them and make sure they have no trouble naturalizing, should they want to. Right now I hear immigrants wanting to naturalize run into all kinds of paperwork problems, etc. and that shouldn't be the case.

I believe tolerance is now associated with "condone", or "allow", instead of kindness. That word evokes a certain reaction. I wish it wasn't used at all, anymore.

I feel immigrants would do better if they learned English and learned about the many customs of others in their community. "Obligation" might be too strong a word, but if I moved to another country I'd try to fit in.

Regarding US Population (scroll to U.S. Baby boom on that page), an increase is better than a decrease, economically speaking. Yes? Who's the economic guru who can help here.... in my mind, immigration is key to a healthier economy.

Lastly, I believe we should respect others. Hateful words, acts, and even billboards aren't a good way to go. We should war with other countries, not war within. In our own country, love can help get things going in the right direction.

What exactly are you implying?

---I feel immigrants would do better if they learned English and learned about the many customs of others in their community. "Obligation" might be too strong a word, but if I moved to another country I'd try to fit in.---

Holly,
By your comments it seems like you are implying that immigrants are not trying to learn English or our customs, like you would if you were an immigrant. I work in a large school that is 60% ELL students, and I must say that nothing could be further from the truth. It comes off as kind of arrogant or ill informed at least?

Also, a better word for welcoming our newest citizens would be, in my opinion, acceptance, rather than just tolerating them.
Take care,
Alec

Justice will only exist where those not affected by injustice are filled with the same amount of indignation as those offended.

I think most do

Hi Alec! I think most immigrants do try to learn English/the customs.

60% is a challenging number. Keep up the good work, and I think you're probably learning a lot there, too.

Old Country

Being only second generation born in this country, I know that at one time, people were hoping to make enough here to go back "home" to live in the "old country". In asking immigration questions, we ought to ask first about our own heritage. I will give American Indians a pass on being able to go back far enough to ask questions about their immigration here.
