Disparities in Republican Justice at the two conventions
In America, one ideal upon which our justice system is founded is that Justice is supposed to be blind. The reality is that it blindly does what the Bush Administration wants. Cheney, Gonzales and Mukasey have completely politicized the Justice Department. We see the justice system treating cases differently depending upon who commited the crime and who the target is.
I find it ironic that protesters who wanted to block the streets of St. Paul are being charged with terrorism-related charges. Our nation's security must be at stake if even one bus of Republican delegates are impeded on their way to the convention. These terrorists are going to have the book thrown at them.
Yet, three white-supremacist junkies busted with plans to assassinate Barack Obama in Denver are not. They had weapons, detailed plans and everything in their hotel room and vehicles necessary to pull off the job. The Republican US Attorney for Colorado declined to pursue conspiracy charges labeling them "more aspirational, perhaps, than operational." Orcinus points this out:
- When police searched the hotel rooms and cars the men were using, they confiscated meth, needles, laptops, cell phones, a black mask, books indicating check fraud and forgery, bags of new clothes, tactical pants and bar coupons.
Based on the evidence, FBI special agent Robert Sawyer believed there was probable cause to charge the men with conspiracy to kill Senator Obama. However, US Attorney Troy Eid last week said there is insufficient evidence to indicate a true threat, plot or conspiracy against the senator.
While those arrested in St. Paul and Minneapolis published their intent to disrupt the RNC on their website, the tweakers in Denver were plotting to murder someone secretly. And not just anyone ... just the guy leading the polls and likely to become the next President of the United States.
Obviously, there's a huge difference. The anarchists were looking to inconvenience Republicans. As our countries motto has become "Give me convenience or give me death, these anarchists crimes are much greater than a planning a murder.
Republicans have characterized opposition to them as treason and their allies in the right wing hate-radio have advocated physically harming opponents. So it only makes sense in the Republican justice system treats these crimes differently.
Murdering a political opponent does not rank as highly as civil disobedience at the RNC in the Republican System of Justice.
